La Danse

Every year Ireland hosts the Jameson Dublin Film Festival. It is such a great opportunity to see films that  are very new, very old or that commercially don't make it on to our regular movie screens.

Last week I went to see the Irish film One Houndred Morningsdirected by Conor Hogan, with a wonderful cast including Kelly Campbell, Ciarán McMenamin, Alex Reid, Rory Keenan and Paul Ronan .  I left the cinema wanting a career change.....and that doesn't happen to often, but making movies, specially as  beautiful and unpretentious as this one, is such a temptation.

Next weekend I will be seeing a film I never thought would make it here but when I saw the festival's schedule I rushed to book tickets.

I'm not sure where or when was the first time I heard about La Danse, but being one of my true 'loves' I spent weeks researching where it was being screened, no where near Ireland until now....this is a unique opportunity to spend 158 minutes in ballet heaven.

6.  Giambattista Valli Pre Fall 2009... very few times does a pre-season outstage Ready to Wear or Couture collections

7. Alexander McQueen SS2010 show in October ( probably not very objective as I was there..) But I think he deserves to be on this list  first and foremost for pushing the bounderies in an industry where the unconventional borderlines the absurd (and yes his accessories are not for everyone but he is a master tailor and an incredibly gifted designer)..and secondly for trying to democratise the fashion world by broadcasting his show live via the internet ( even though Lady Gaga stole his thunder...)  
 

8. Tim Ryan. Simply because he is one of the most talented current Irish designers.

 

9. The original English version of  The Women (I had only seen it dubbed in Spanish) with  Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard and Joan Fontaine

Loie Fuller by John Alexander White 

 

1862-1928

Loie Fuller had no formal training and was an important modern dance pioneer. While performing  she was intrigued by the special effects and would project images  onto fabric by using  calcium lights, drapery and magic lanterns

 Fuller used dozens of metres of the silk fabric as her costumes, and would drape herself in beautiful shapes of butterflies and flowers. Her dances were lit against a black floor and background by colored electric lights.
